Close the Gap Day

  • 2 mins

Each year, Close the Gap Day serves as an important reminder of the health, education, economic, and life outcomes gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

It is a day to reflect, raise awareness, and take action towards achieving equity for First Nations communities.

The National Agreement on Closing the Gap

In 2020, Australian governments and Indigenous organisations came together to develop the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, which sets 19 national socio-economic targets across 17 outcome areas to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These targets focus on key areas such as health, education, employment, housing, and justice – all of which are interconnected in achieving equity.

Key Outcome Areas

The 17 socio-economic outcome areas aim to create a more equal society by addressing:

  • Health – Reducing preventable diseases and ensuring access to culturally appropriate healthcare.
  • Education – Closing the school attendance and literacy gaps.
  • Employment – Increasing economic participation and financial security.
  • Housing – Improving access to safe, secure housing.
  • Justice – Reducing Indigenous incarceration rates.
  • Language & Culture – Strengthening First Nations languages and cultural identity.
  • Economic Participation – Supporting Indigenous businesses and employment opportunities.

Each of these areas directly impacts health outcomes, making a holistic approach essential to lasting change.

How Can You Get Involved?

Everyone has a role to play in supporting equality for First Nations Australians. Here’s how you can contribute:

  • Support Indigenous health & wellbeing initiatives.
  • Educate yourself and others.
  • Advocate for policy change.

Closing the gap isn’t just about statistics; it’s about real people, real communities, and real futures. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a fairer Australia where First Nations Australians have the same opportunities for health, education, and economic success.

Let’s listen, learn, and take meaningful steps towards a healthier and more equal Australia.
