If you are a person living with pressure sores, or limited mobility, purchasing a bed and a pressure care mattress which helps with ease of movement and comfort is something you are likely to have considered.

High-quality bedding equipment is extremely important in meeting individual requirements. An electric bed offers the ability to adjust the height, backrest angle and knee/calf elevation and overall comfort and relief for the user. Ensuring that the user has the correct mattress is also crucial to guaranteeing not only comfort but ease of use.

Something important to note is that regular domestic mattresses often don’t have the suitable functionality to work with an electric bed.

Many people often make the mistake of buying beds from commercial retailers that may seem very easy and offer similar benefits as a medically-approved bed; however, they are not fit in allowing users to utilise the bed to their individual requirements, for example, adjusting the height of the bed to allow them to transfer on and off the bed.

To help you select a bed and mattress that will suit your needs, we spoke with the experts at Surgical House in Western Australia who recommended the following key things to consider:

6. Range of adjustments: Ensure that the bed you’re considering has a sufficient range of adjustments to meet individual requirements. Typically electric beds may offer adjustment of height, backrest angle and knee/calf elevation.

7. Consider the use: Because regular domestic mattresses are not generally suitable for electric beds, you will likely need to purchase a new mattress along with your bed. When buying your new mattress, give consideration to any special requirements. For example, is the user at risk of developing pressure injuries? Will they be spending extended periods of time in the bed? Is a waterproof mattress cover required?

8. Accessories: Consider bed accessories that might be required. These may include items such as fold down side rails or self-help poles to assist users with getting in and out of bed.
The best course of action when considering a purchase like this is to get advice and thoroughly consider the needs of the user.
