Getting Started (NDIS)

The NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The NDIS gives you the freedom to choose who supports you, and the flexibility to work with a range of service providers to help you reach your goals.

The NDIS and you

You might be eligible for the NDIS if you:

  • live in Australia and are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • are under 65 years old
  • have a lifelong impairment or disability that stops you from doing everyday things by yourself

You can check your eligibility for the NDIS here. When you’re ready, you can apply to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and they will get you started.

What Does the NDIS Do?

The NDIS funds necessary support services that are linked to outcomes identified in a participant’s plan. These support services must:

  • Be associated with day-to-day living and activities that increase your social/economic participation
  • Be a health resource or a piece of equipment/assistive technology
  • Help you build valuable skills that will improve your life, including opportunities to work, furthering your education and volunteering

Setting Your Goals

A lot of participants in the NDIS aren’t completely sure of their long-term goals. This is understandable, and your plan will focus on your immediate needs while offering you the chance to reflect on your longer-term needs and goals. The HenderCare team can work with you and your family to establish your goals.

Early Intervention Requirements

The Early Intervention part of the NDIS has been established to help people who believe their impairment or condition is likely to be permanent. Early intervention can help improve your condition or delay its deterioration while assisting you with completing everyday tasks.

This is also granted for children under 7 years of age with a developmental delay that results in substantially reduced functional capacity in one or more of the areas of self-care, language, cognitive development or motor development. If your child needs special care and treatments for extended durations, checking their eligibility for the NDIS could grant you much-needed support.
