HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely

Course Description 

The training in this course allows you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required to firstly recognise potentially hazardous manual tasks and the sources of risks and risk factors.

You will prepare for and apply controls to complete tasks using manual handling techniques which support safe work practice. You will also learn about the function of the body in movement and performing manual tasks, the importance of posture and positioning of the body and how to recognise symptoms of an injury and report it.

This course is specifically intended for nurses, personal care workers, and community support workers who are working in hospitals, residential care settings and providing services to individuals in their own homes in the community. The course is currently offered in South Australia and Victoria only. Units Being Delivered

The following units will be included in your certificate:

  • HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely (valid for 12 months for HenderCare team members)

Course Delivery and Assessment Requirements 

The course consists of an online component which must be completed at least 24-hours before attending a 40-minute face-to-face practical assessment. Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written (online) and practical assessment tasks. Practical assessments are conducted in small groups of 2 participants with measures in place to manage COVID-19 risks.

Entry Requirements 

You must have the physical capacity to use appropriate equipment, posture and handling techniques to conduct a manual move and/or lift.

You must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/pre-course study before attending the face-to-face session.

Assessment Activities 

Performance tasks and Practical scenarios 

  • Identify a manual task involving risk
  • Undertake risk assessment and complete a risk assessment form
  • Prepare for the manual task
  • Safely complete the manual task
  • Complete relevant documentation

Theory assessment

You will be required to complete a written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions, all of which must be answered.
