Therapy Thursday: gratitude jar activity

  • 1 min

This Therapy Thursday is all about gratitude.

HenderCare Senior Social Worker, Hayley Chenoweth has provided us with the perfect at-home winter-friendly activity that can get us all thinking about those things that are the most important to us.

The activity is aimed at children but can be done by all ages!

Gratitude Jars are a fun, artistic, and hands-on way for children to practice gratitude.

In this activity, each child will create a special jar where they save gratitude statements at the end of the day.

Materials

  • Clear Jar (glass or plastic)
  • Art Supplies (ribbons, stickers, magazine cutouts, paper etc.)

Instructions

Find a jar or cup, help your child personalise their jar, and make it special! They can use art supplies to do this. After decorating the jars, explain to your children that a gratitude statement is when we acknowledge something that we appreciate or something we are thankful for. You can encourage your children to write their statements or some helpful ideas/prompts might be:

  • Today was special because…
  • I appreciate (person) because…
  • Something I accomplished today was…
  • Something I’m looking forward to is…
  • Something I am thankful for is…
  • Three people that make me happy are…
  • Something that makes me smile or laugh is…
  • Today I had fun when…
  • I am proud because…
  • Something I like about myself is…
  • Something good that happened today is…

Once you and your children have written your three statements, share your statements then place them in the jar.

Incorporating this into your daily or weekly routine is a fantastic opportunity to learn what is going on in your child’s world and develop a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the ‘small’ things 😊
