The week is about promoting the importance of communication support and inclusion for the deaf community and empowering those who are deaf or hard of hearing in their communities.
This week also includes International Day of Sign Languages.
HenderCare Speech Pathologist, Sarah Gilmore, emphasises the importance of providing resources and support for those in the deaf community:
“The barriers experienced by people who are deaf and hard of hearing in the community, education settings and workplace, can be significantly alleviated through accessible environments and communication supports; these may include the use of a sign language interpreter, technology, written information, subtitles or other visual supports.
Where accessible and inclusive communication is achieved, a deaf person may not be limited in meaningful participation and building successful learning and working relationships.”
