Being more accessible, one image description at a time

  • 2 mins

For us, Facebook is a great platform to connect with participants, consumers and friends.

If you’re not already a member of our Facebook community, please come and join us! With every post we write that has an image or photo included with it, we include an image description.

Why are image descriptions so important?

Recently, we’ve had a few questions about why we include image descriptions with every Facebook post. It’s important to us that people who have a disability, for example a vision impairment, are still able to access and participate in the stories we share. An image description is a simple way for us to be inclusive.

If someone in our community has a vision impairment and is using a screen reading device or program, our image description means they will be able to understand the image that goes with the post we’ve written.

Spotlight on inclusion

We are a Registered NDIS Provider, and we take accessibility seriously. Image descriptions aren’t just for people in the community with a disability, though. We are also a Home Care Package Provider and Veterans’ Home Care Provider, which means we provide in-home support to older Australians. Amongst the community of older Australians that we support, there are people who benefit from image descriptions too.
